TROY — A local daycare facility is celebrating 25 years of caring for the area’s children.
Troy Early Beginnings, located at 1021 S. Dorset Road, opened on Dec. 11, 1991, with just 11 children.
Owners Drew and Jackie Shock, longtime Tipp City residents, said the area has grown — much like their business, which now serves 103 children.
“When the child care opened, there were only two businesses on South Dorset, ours and Dr. Redick next door,” Jackie Shock said. “There was no Motoman, no Stillwater, no AAA — just an open field.”
The Shocks — who have been in the child care business since 1975 — also own Anna’s Child Care in Vandalia, an Early Beginnings in Vandalia, and facilities in West Carrollton, Centerville and Huber Heights.
The couple said they are dedicated to providing good child care for children six weeks through 11 years old.
“We believe the first five years of life are the most important in growth and development,” Jackie Shock said. “We provide a quality, nurturing, loving, educational environment where parents can feel safe to drop off their child and go to work and are able to concentrate on their jobs.”
The Troy facility provides care Monday through Friday from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m.
Jackie Shock said their program helps children become kindergarten ready, much of it through interaction with the environment, friends and adults.
“All of this is accomplished through play,” Jackie Shock said. “When you see children playing with others, working in a learning center or just reading a book, you’ll know they are learning and having fun. It also allows them to feel more secure about themselves, which will enable them to succeed later in life.”
Computers also are used in the preschool and school-age classrooms, she said.
“We feel very fortunate that we have been able to touch so many lives. Our initial philosophy was to provide a safe, nurturing environment so parents would feel comfortable leaving their child without worry,” Jackie said. “We have had the same philosophy for the past 42 years.”
