PIQUA — The Piqua Post 184 legion baseball team suffered its seventh loss in eight games with a 7-3 defeat at the hands of Sidney Post 217 Tuesday at Hardman Field.
With the loss, Post 184 fell to 4-8 on the season.
Walks, errors and other miscues proved costly for Piqua in the loss to Sidney.
After three innings, the two teams were knotted in a scoreless tie. In the top of the fourth, however, Sidney got on the board first thanks in large part to walk, a wild pitch and a single. Post 217 would extend that lead to 2-0 in the top of the fifth inning when a walk, a sacrifice bunt and a throwing error led to an unearned run.
Piqua would come firing back in the bottom of the sixth inning, scoring three runs on a walk, single, triple and fielder’s choice, allowing Post 184 to take a 3-2 lead.
That would be the end of the fireworks for Piqua, however, as Sidney pitchers Josh Nixon and Cam Clark combined to shut things down for Post 184 the rest of the way.
Sidney would retake the lead in the top of the eighth inning, scoring three runs — all with two outs. A hit batter, a Post 184 error, followed by a pair of singles and a ground-rule double, allowed Post 217 to take a 5-3 lead.
In the top of the ninth inning, Sidney would add a pair of insurance runs on a single, another hit bitter, a single and a successful suicide squeeze.
Piqua will look to get things back on track beginning tonight as it competes in the Hillbilly Hardball Classic in West Virginia. The tournament runs today through Sunday. There will be 30 teams from a half-dozen state participating in the tournament.
Each team will get five divisional games, followed by a championship round Sunday.
