The 2018 Edison State Charger baseball team will be looking to improve on the 2017 season, which featured the program’s first bid to the OCCAC sub-regional tournament.
The Chargers open the 2018 season Friday, as they host Ivy Tech Community College Northeast for two games beginning at 3 p.m.
On the mound, the Chargers will be returning a majority of the pitching staff that led the conference in strikeouts and K’s/9. Returning starters will include Marcus Johnson (Bryan Station HS-Lexington, KY), Jackson Hobbs (Ft. Recovery HS), Tanner Lee (Northmont HS), and Nick Gray (Tri-County North HS) as well as relievers Garrett Lee (Northmont HS), Elijah Bennett (Waynesville HS), and Will Wells (Graham HS).
“We are fortunate to have this many guys with game experience on the staff,” said Edison State Head Coach Scott Jones. “Last season, we were a little green on the mound but feel we have a strong recruiting class and are looking to some of these guys to really contribute on the hill.”
Freshmen Ryan Profitt (Fairborn HS), Hunt Doepel (Waynesville HS), Dylan Welch (Vandalia Butler HS), and Evan Ford (Tippecanoe HS) all had competitive fall seasons as well as transfer Dillon Watkins (Urbana HS).
On the field, Edison State will have some new faces after graduating the entire starting infield. Top returning position players Brandt Cronebach (.369, Northmont HS), Dustin Parsons (.379, Anderson HS), Alex Murphy (Vandalia HS), Drake Carman (Lebanon HS), Tavian Baniel (Centerville HS), and Jose Adorno (Vega Alta, Puerto Rico) will be looked upon to anchor an inexperienced lineup.
“We have a good group coming in,” added Coach Jones. “This year’s class of position players that we have signed has been our strongest yet. We have addressed our issues with depth and speed.”
Newcomers Travis Smith (Piqua HS), Dylan Arnold (Lehman Catholic HS), Cameron Davis (Cincinnati Country Day HS), Austin McLain (Sidney HS), Will Ludington (Northmont HS), Jake Clements (Loveland HS), Chase Schoeff (Jeffersontown HS–Louisville, KY), Gustavo Bonilla (Juncos, Puerto Rico), Edward Alexander (Jeffersontown HS–Louisville, KY), Tanner Keyes (Jeffersontown HS–Louisville, KY), Cooper Denney (Kettering Fairmont HS), Leamsi Bermundez (Patillas, Puerto Rico), Henry Barwick (Vandalia Butler HS), and Jake Whisman (Centerville HS) will all be looking to contribute.
Conference play starts Friday, March 23rd with the Chargers hosting Mercyhurst North East beginning at 1 p.m.
“As usual, our conference games will be our toughest games of the regular season,” Jones said. “We are fortunate to play in the OCCAC a league that usually has a couple of nationally ranked baseball programs nationally. This makes for a high level of play and anytime we can play that type of schedule it will ultimately make our program better. We are excited to start the season and are looking to improve on 2017.”
