Newton girls pick up win; Versailles bowlers sweep matches

NEW BREMEN — The Lehman Catholic girls basketball team will play at Riverside Thursday.

The Lady Cavaliers are coming off a 61-30 loss to New Bremen.

Carly Edwards had seven points and six rebounds in the game, while Grace Monnin had six points and five rebounds.

Rylie McIver had five steals.

NEW LEBANON — The Newton girls basketball team will play at Miami East in a big CCC matchup Thursday.

On Saturday, Newton got a 58-33 win over Dixie.

Tatum McBride nearly matched Dixie, scoring 26 points.

Bradford JH

The Bradford junior high basketball team split two games with Russia recently.

The seventh grade lost 26-8, with Remi Harleman scoring all eight points.

The seventh grade won 30-21.

Austy Miller and Rylee Canan led Bradford with eight points each.

The Versailles bowling team swept a pair of matches recently at Pla-Mor Lanes


The Versailles boys defeated Ansonia 2,502-1,923.

Individual scores included Sam Bensman (169, 193), Quayd Pearson (160, 165), Luke Shellhaas (148, 176), Brandon Bradley (151, 150), Tyler Gehret (165), and Bretten Cheadle (129).

“The competition was not as strong as some the Tigers will face which placed a challenge in terms of focus,” Versailles coach Tyler Philipot said. “The boys decided to set goals each game to keep their momentum. The Tigers came a little short of their goal for Baker average (180) with scores of 151, 182, 192, 204and 167.

”With continued practice for improvement, positive attitudes and focus despite who they are bowling against they will certainly be a strong team heading into the tournaments.”

The Tigers record is now 4-3 (4-1 in conference).


The Versailles girls defeated Minster 2,429-2,138.

“The girls struggled a little bit in game 1 with consistency, but they kept their focus cleaning up their shots in the second game,” Phlipot said.

Individual scores were Makenzie Berning (165, 202), Morgan Barlage (127, 192), Morgan Heitkamp (155, 132), Payton Bulcher (190), Lindsey Cheadle (172), Haddi Treon (145), Jena Mangen (147).

“Payton Bulcher and Lindsey Cheadle both bowled game 2 with great scores and worked hard with the team in the Baker games,” Phliot said. “Morgan Heitkamp sat out during Baker games due to an injury and the other girls stepped in bowling in different positions.

The Baker scores were 152, 156, 148, 183and 163 for an 802 total.


Buccs JV team

takes fifth place

VERSAILLES — The Covington JV wrestling team took fifth out of 10 teams at the Versailles JV Invitational, with five place-winners. Kyle Barga and Logan Lowe both advanced to the finals at 132 pounds, with Barga taking first by forfeit, while Lowe finished 2nd. Barga earned one pin and two technical falls to advance to the finals, while Lowe earned three pins.

Bryce Smith (138) also finished in first place on tiebreaking criteria with a 3-1 record with two pins.

Hunter Clarkson (160) finished third with a 3-1 record with two pins, while Joseph Franke (195) took fourth with one pin.

Also competing for the Buccs were David Robinson (126, pin) and Seth Iddings (160).
