The Piqua boys golf team played a strong Troy team in GWOC North play Thursday on the back nine at Echo Hills.
So, Piqua coach Josh Burns new it was going to be a tough match going in.
And that is how it worked out.
Troy recorded a 156-178 victory over the Indians.
“Troy is really good,” Burns said. “Their only loss in the North is to Vandalia in a close match. Vandalia has an exceptional team. They shot 135 against us on their home course (Cassel Hills).”
Burns just would have liked for Piqua to play a little better.
Kyle Ingle led Piqua with a 41 and Derek Jennings added a 44.
Other Indian scores were Derrick Gullett 45, Brennan Hicks 48, Kody Poling 49 and Spencer Lavey 55.
“We haven’t been playing that well as of late,” Burns said. “That is something we need to work on.”
Piqua will host Covington Monday and Greenville Tuesday, which will be Senior Night for Ingle and Gullett. Then comes the GWOC tournament Beechwood and the D-I sectional at Reid Park North.
“We play Reid (Park) last Saturday,” Burns said. “And we have played Beechwood a number of times. So, we should be comfortable on that course.”
Piqua will take a 3-7 record overall and 2-2 in the GWOC North into next week’s matches.
Andrew Slusher was medalist with 37 as the Covington boys golf team defeated Franklin Monroe Wednesday at Echo Hills.
Other Covington scores were Levi Winn 39, Ryan Gengler 50, James Grilliot 54, Braden Miller 56 and Jack Shell 70.
On Senior Night, the Covington girls golf team defeated Franklin Monroe 219-262 at Echo Hills.
“It was a great night for our senior, winning her last match at Echo Hills,” Covington coach Adam Sweigart said. “Sydney (Blanton) has been working hard all season and we are very appreciative of her leadership and scoring consistency for our team this year. We have been playing well lately, hopefully we can ride this momentum headed into sectionals at the end of the month.”
Covington scores were Kelsey McReynolds 50, Sydney Blanton 53, Addison Metz 56, Megan Alexander 60, Noelle Gast 61 and Emily Thompson 70.
