The “bright lights” of playing in the Big 12 at Iowa State University are shining on a former Piqua resident as she begins her freshman season with the Cyclones.
Madison Wise, a finalist for Indiana’s “Miss Basketball” last spring, is a freshman and already making her mark. The former resident of Piqua, who chose Iowa State over more than 30 D-I universities which offered basketball scholarships, has worked her way into the starting lineup, and has already broken a school record.
Making her first start for Iowa State (2 – 1) this week, she recorded a double-double (15 points and 15 rebounds) and broke the school record with nine rebounds in the first quarter. She is currently the second-leading scorer on her team and was featured with her freshman teammate/roommate, Kristin Scott, in the Ames newspaper with the headline “Freshmen Taking Over Iowa State Women’s Basketball Team”. With graduation hitting Iowa State hard, their three freshman are expected to play key roles.
Wise earliest yearwas spent in Piqua when her dad, Kent Wise, was Piqua’s varsity boys’ coach. She finished her high school career at Greenfield, Indiana, where she became the fifth player in Indiana girls’ basketball history to score more than 2,000 points and grab more than 1,000 rebounds
Iowa State has qualified for the NCAA women’s tourney in 10 of the last 11 seasons. They average over 9,000 for home games and for the past two seasons have ranked third in the nation – trailing only South Carolina and Tennessee
