SIDNEY — On Saturday, two traditional girls’ high school soccer powers and district rivals Troy Christian and Lehman Catholic squared off to preview their varsity squads in a friendly matchup with one week left in the 2017 soccer preseason at Sidney High School’s Turf field at Sidney Memorial Stadium.
“The OHSAA allows each team to have one varsity preview match in the preseason that equals one half the length of a regular game,” Lehman Catholic coach Jeremy Lorenzo said. “We did this last year with Sidney and had hoped to continue it, but unfortunately, we couldn’t get our schedules to line up.
“I called Troy Christian coach Brian Peters and asked if he wanted to play in the friendly since we don’t play each other until the last game of the season. He agreed and here we are.”
With the Lehman Youth Soccer campers in attendance — in addition to families and local soccer fans, the shortened game had all the makings of a real match.
“The game didn’t disappoint as it was very competitive and fast paced,” Lorenzo said “This was great for both of our programs. Neither of us get on turf much and don’t see venue’s like this one until late in the tournament.”
Afterwards both teams showed a tremendous display of sportsmanship and posed for a combined team photo.
“Although we won the scrimmage, it was about so much more than that. Brian and I both look at this as a training opportunity,” Lorenzo said. “It was so awesome to see the sportsmanship and well wishes after the game.”
Lehman opens it’s season on Saturday at Cincinnati Madeira which will be a rematch of last year’s 1-0 loss in the district championship. Madeira later lost in the Regional Finals in overtime to State Runner-up Cincinnati Country Day.
