This past weekend former Piqua football standout Colin Nickolai competed at BristolMotor Speedway making a dream come true.
There were 67 of the best teams in the country registered in the Pro Late Model Division.
Most of these teams have big budgets but Nickolai competes with hard work and determination.
During practice on Friday, he consistently was in the top ten on the speed charts and the top five in a couple.
On Saturday, they qualified which was critical since the starting field would only be 32 cars so many would go home. He did not disappoint qualifying ninth.
“I have seen Colin race in many events through the years but this track is scary fast and he was basically flat footing in all the way around the track,” Colin’s father Dan Nickolai said.
On Sunday rain was the biggest competitor as everything was delayed pushing it into a night race.
Due to the threat of weather, the three divisions all ran 51 of the 100 laps and then cycled back through and ran the remaining 49.
In the first segment, Nickolai ran up in the top 10 avoiding many accidents and then on lap 34 during a restart running fourth, he blew a front right tire entering turn one.
The pit crew did an excellent job getting the tire changed and keeping him on the lead lap. He then threw caution to the wind and drove from last to seventh place by the end of the segment.
The second segment Colin ran up in the top five, as high as third but ended up coming home in fifth. This was definitely a dream come true.
