COVINGTON — The Miami East wrestling team went undefeated at the Covington Duals Saturday, defeating Arcanum 69-3, Covington 47-30, National Trail 63-9, Lehman 58-21 and Tri-County North 70-12.
Covington gave Miami East its most competitive match of the day. After both team’s exchange forfeit wins to open the match, East’s Micah Davis beat Kyle Barga, 12-4, at 120 pounds. After another East win by forfeit, East’s Trey Rush (132) pinned Austin Flick in 3:31 and teammate Alex Isbrandt (138) pinned Fletcher Metz in 1:12.
Miami East led 31-6 after Zane Strubler (145) beat Martin Kerington 3-1, but Covington would trim that lead to 31-30 with three-straight pins and a forfeit win. Covington’s Josh Sowers (152) pinned Cody Nickels in 3:32, Deron White (160) pinned Michael Miller in 5:46 and Ross Bowman (182) pinned Colton Kowalak in 3:32.
East would close the dual with three-straight wins as Matt Welker (195) beat Gavin McReynolds 12-1, Brenden Dalton pinned Bryce Keiser in 18 seconds and Zack Schellhouse pinned Carl Lankford in 3:08.
Against Arcanum, Graham Shore (126) won by technical fall, Rush won by pin, Strubler won by pin, Miller won by major decision, Kowalak won by pin and Dalton won by pin.
Shore and Isbrandt both picked up pins against National Trail, while Kowalak won by decision.
Against Lehman, Rush and Strubler both won by pin, while Welker won a major decision.
In the match against TC North, Nickels and Shore both won by technical fall, while Rush, Isbrandt, Strubler, Nickels, Miller, Kowalak, Welker, Dalton and Schellhous all recorded pins.
Covington finished as runnerup, going 4-1
Going undefeated for the Buccs with 5-0 records were Dolan Young (106 lbs, pin), Josh Sowers (145, 4 pins), Deron White (152, 4 pins) and Lance Miller (160, 2 pins). Riley Richards (126) finished 4-0 on the day.
Going 4-1 were Keringten Martin (138, 2 pins) and Ross Bowman (170, 3 pins). Austin Flick (132, 3 pins) finished 3-1 overall while Carl Lankford (285) went 4-2 with 2 pins.
Kyle Barga (120) and Gavin McReynolds (182) went 3-2. Ian Wilson (170) finished 2-1, and Fletcher Metz (132) went 1-1 with a pin. Bryce Keiser (220) also picked up a pin for the Buccs.
Buccs JH wins
Covington’s junior high team finished 5-0 overall with victories over Arcanum 66-12, Lehman 66-3, Miami East 51-30, National Trail 64-6 and Tri-County North 54-12.
Going 5-0 for the Buccs were Devin Newhouse (80), Cael Vanderhorst (104, 3 pins), Nolan Neves (116, pin), Gavin Swank (134, 2 pins) and Duncan Cooper (150, pin). Going 4-0 were Connor Sindelir (98, 2 pins), and Hunter Clarkson (160, 2 pins).
Finishing 4-1 were Jake Dilley (98, pin), David Robinson (110, 3 pins), Deacon Shields (122, pin) and Clayton Stephan (245, pin). Dakota Clarkson (128, 2 pins) finished 2-1.
Also wrestling and picking up wins for Covington were Bryce Smith (116, pin), Hunter Basye (116), Jensen Wagoner (128, pin), Ricky Stephan (142) and Scott Blumenstock (245, pin).
Buccs youth wrestle
The Covington youth wrestling team hosted teams from Piqua, Troy, Versailles, Sidney, Arcanum, Graham and Preble-Shawnee.
Taking first place for the Buccs were Mason Sowers (3 pins), Brody Taylor (3 pins), Colton Gambill (2 pins), Christopher Ha (2 pins), Chase Vanderhorst (2 pins), Cooper Turner (1 pin), Landin Cassel (1 pin), Andrew Basye (1 pin), Eli Donnan (1 pin) and Michael Hagan.
Finishing second were Jordan Miller (2 pins), Brycen Roth (2 pins), Weston Roth (1 pin), Wyatt Collins (1 pin), Aubrey Bishop (1 pin), Jack Blumenstock (1 pin), Dalton Bishop (1 pin), Kaden Thompson and Asher Long.
Taking third place at the event were Isaiah Mumford (1 pin), Joseph Hamilton (1 pin), Henry Skaggs (1 pin), Kian French (1 pin), Bronson Schnurpel, Jonathan Miller, Sam Wolfe, AJ Garmin and Autumn Estep.
Finishing in fourth place were James Young, Landon Beeman, Aiden Gutierrez, Mason Epperson, Trey Schmelzer and Kaden Hughes.
The Buccs travel to Miamisburg on Sunday.
