MIAMI COUNTY — The members of the Kiwanis Club of Troy will be credited as the first at bat to kickoff the campaign fundraising efforts for the area’s first Miracle League ball field.
On Friday at Paul G. Duke Park, the Kiwanis Club of Troy donated $30,000 to support the Miracle League of the Miami Valley’s “field of dreams” to add a rubber-surfaced baseball field with handicap accessible dugouts and other modified amenities. The cost of the field is approximately $400,000.
Troy City Council member, Kiwanis Club and Miracle League of Miami Valley president Bobby Phillips accepted the donation on behalf of the organization.
“The purpose of gathering today is to announce that we’ll be actively and aggressively kicking off our fundraising efforts,” Phillips said. “With this project today, we are exceedingly happy Kiwanis has stepped up to the plate.”
President of the Kiwanis Club of Troy Jennifer Honeyman said she fell in love with the project so children and adults of all ability have the opportunity to play ball.
“I could see smiles, I could hear the cheers, I could smell the popcorn … all the things we take for granted every day is now going to be available to everyone,” Honeyman said.
President of council Marty Baker expressed their gratitude for the donation on behalf of city council and Mayor Michael Beamish.
“The city is also very pleased to be working alongside the Miracle League of the Miami Valley and sharing their dream for this expansion of Duke Park,” Baker said. “It is truly the families of the Troy area who will benefit from the diverse baseball complex that will serve all of our children and grandchildren for generations.”
Baker also thanked the Duke-Robinson Foundation for their grant support which helped fund the 118-acre expansion of the park.
Philips said it may be two years until the rubberized field is installed and league play between neighboring counties of all ages and abilities can be organized. The area’s Miracle League fields include Springboro, Dublin and Cincinnati.
The Miracle League of the Miami Valley board members include: President Bobby Phillips, Vice-President Wade Westfall, Secretary Penny Hoekstra, Treasurer John Frigge, board members Heath Murray, Melissa Nichols, Logan Francis and Jeremy Drake.
