Kasich names Oda to Edison board

COLUMBUS – Governor John R. Kasich has appointmented James C. Oda of Piqua (Miami County) to the Edison State Community College Board of Trustees for a term beginning March 23, 2017, and ending January 17, 2023.

Brooks appointed CEO

PIQUA — Buckeye Insurance Group announced the appointment of John M. Brooks as their president and Chief Executive Officer effective March 22. He assumed responsibilities upon appointment and succeeds R. Douglas Haines who resigned earlier this year.

William L. Sweet Jr., chairman of the board, said, “The Board appreciates John’s contributions during his tenure with Buckeye and is excited to work with him in his new role. We have confidence he will capitalize on his leadership skills, operational expertise and relationships with our staff and independent agents to implement the strategic vision. We look forward to collaborating with him.”

Brooks joined Buckeye Insurance Group in 2001 as assistant vice president of Claims. Two years later, he was promoted to senior vice president of Insurance Operations. From 2008-2016, he served as Chief Operating Officer. During that time, he rebalanced the insurance portfolio to enhance the risk position, incorporated analytics into rating structures, improved auto loss ratios, and integrated IT into Operations to improve the customer experience. Brooks was named interim president and Chief Executive Officer in January 2017.

Brooks graduated with a bachelor’s degree in Political Science from the University of Dayton in 1992. He expanded his expertise through coursework with the Insurance Institute of America earning the Associate in Claims, Associate in Management, Chartered Property Casualty Underwriter (CPCU), and the Associate in Reinsurance designations. He served the Ohio Association of Mutual Insurance Companies as president in 2012 and as director since 2009.

Buckeye Insurance Group offers home, farm and automobile insurance through independent agents in Ohio, Indiana, Kansas, Georgia and South Dakota.

Family Video patrons support Lymphoma research

TROY — Family Video of Troy and Piqua helped to raise more than $1 million during its seventh annual “Round It Up for Lymphoma” campaign.

During the campaign, which ran through March 26, customers had the choice to round up their purchases to the nearest dollar, with all proceeds going to the Lymphoma Research Foundation and the Lymphoma Research Biobank at the University of Chicago.

Over the past seven years, “Round It Up for Lymphoma” has raised nearly $7.5 million. To date, the Lymphoma Research Foundation has raised more than $55 million for lymphoma-specific research.
