Women of Excellence noms sought

PIQUA — The YWCA Piqua is accepting nominations for the 2016 Women of Excellence awards and the Young Woman of Tomorrow award (16-22 years by May 16, 2016). Nominating forms are available at the YWCA Piqua, 418 N. Wayne St. The completed forms must be received at the YWCA by 5 p.m. May 16 or postmarked by May 16.

This awards program, established by the YWCA in 1997, recognizes women and young women who reside in, are employed, or active in Miami County and have distinguished themselves in their careers and/or in civic and community activities. An individual, a group, or an organization may submit nominations.

This year’s honorees will be selected by a committee of impartial judges composed of men and women from throughout Miami County. Selections will be announced in late summer and the awards will be presented at a gala luncheon on October 20.

Rain barrel workshop set

LAURA — Union Township Workshop will be holding a Rain Barrel Workshop on Thursday, April 28, at the Union Township Office/Garage at 9497 Markley Road, Laura.

The workshop cost is $45 and includes your rain barrel kit and 55 gallon food grade barrel. This workshop is limited to 25, so please understand that preference will be made to Union Township residents.

Superhero Saturday planned

MIAMI COUNTY — The Miami County YMCA Robinson Branch is offering a Superhero Saturday event on Saturday, April 30, for youth in first through sixth grade. This will be a fun filled night with gym games, swimming, the bounce house, and a movie. Come dressed as your favorite superhero or create your own powers and persona to participate in the superhero games. Pizza and lemonade will be served during the movie. Drop off begins at 7 p.m. and pick up is at 11:30 p.m. Saturday.

Tai Chi to be offered

PIQUA — Dea Davis will facilitate a new session of Tai Chi for Health Practice with a four-week session beginning Monday, May 2, from 11 a.m. to noon at the YWCA.

“The class will focus on improving balance, relaxation and breathing,” said Davis. “The movements will be gentle, smooth and continuous with emphasis on gaining strength and better balance. Tai Chi enhances one’s overall health and quality of life.”

New students are welcome, according to Beth Royer-DeLong, YWCA program director.

Knit, crochet for cancer

PIQUA — Suzie Hawkes will coordinate a knitting activity for cancer patients on Thursday, May 5, at 10 a.m. at the YWCA Piqua. Participants will be knitting or crocheting hats and other items to donate to cancer patients at UVMC. Individuals coming to help with this project are asked to bring their own yarn, knitting needles or crochet hooks.
