Farmers Market seeks vendors

PIQUA — The eighth season of the Piqua Community Farmers Market will begin Thursday, May 26. In an effort to recruit additional vendors, Mainstreet Piqua will host an open house for potential market vendors on Thursday, April 7, from 5-7 p.m. at the Mainstreet Piqua office, 326 N. Main St.

Visitors and potential vendors will have a chance to ask questions about the Farmers Market and complete their applications. Vendors also will get information on market readiness, marketing and receive promotional information about the market.

The 2016 market hours will be 3:30-6:30 p.m. each Thursday through Sept. 16, in downtown Piqua.

All vendors at the Farmers Market, including those returning from last year, are required to complete an application form and be formally approved to set up at the market.

Fundraiser to feature Vitale

PIQUA — State Representative Nino Vitale (R-Urbana) will be the featured guest at Raise the Roof for the Arts of Sidney’s “Puttin’ on the Glitz” fundraiser at 11:30 a.m. Saturday, April 23, at the Piqua Country Club.

Vitale represents Ohio’s 85th district, which includes Champaign County, and portions of Logan and Shelby counties.

The afternoon will include a champagne luncheon, fashion show and raffles from supporting local businesses.

Reservations can be made for $35 beginning Friday, March 25, by visiting or by stop by the RTR office in Sidney at 126½ E. Poplar St., second floor.

Proceeds from “Puttin’ on the Glitz” will be used to support the current revitalization of the Historic Sidney Theatre.

Newton to present ‘Aladdin’

PLEASANT HILL — Newton High School Drama Club will present their annual school play, “Aladdin,” book by Robert Neil Porter, music and lyrics by Jack Perry at 7 p.m. Saturday, April 9, and 3 p.m. Sunday, April 10. Doors open a half an hour before each performance.

The cast includes: Genie – Skyler Wilson; Princess Balmyra – Ashley Anthony; Jasmine – Michaela Drieling; Amber – Jasmine Ingle; Tiger Lily – Kasey Bowerman, Tareye the Terrible – Garrison Willoughby; Aladdin – Windsor Rapp; Aladdin’s Mother – Katherine Marker; Turkish Magician – Nick Lesley; Sultan – Nick Hoover; and Sultana – Aliya Stine.

The Crew consists of: Pianist and Foley – Milan Bess; Spotlight – Moustafa Simpara.

Co-Directors for this year’s play are Halee Mollette and Trina Short.

Kindergarten screening set

PLEASANT HILL — Newton Elementary School has set Friday, April 15 beginning at 8:30 a.m. in the high school gym for kindergarten registration and screening for the 2016-2017 school year.

A child must be five years old by Aug. 1 to attend kindergarten this fall.

Parents should bring: child’s birth certificate, Social Security number, immunization records, and custody papers (if applicable), as well as completed registration and transportation forms.

Every child needs to have an appointment to be screened; please call the elementary office at (937) 676-2002 as soon as possible to schedule a time.
