Hamilton to speak on Randolph Freedmen

PIQUA — Greater Love Missionary Baptist Church will sponsor a presentation on “A Historical Perspective on the Randolph Narrative and the Politics of Division” by Larry Hamilton at the Piqua Public Library at 7 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 1.

Greater Love MBC worships in the building constructed by Randolph Freedmen on Park Avenue in the 1880s. Hamilton, a retired history teacher at Piqua High School, has also long taught Sunday school at Greater Love. The church is calling for the community to be aware of the last week of the Randolph Freedmen Exhibit currently on display at the library until Nov. 1. Hamilton is willing to meet with and view the Randolph exhibit with visitors prior to his presentation in the Helen Louis Room on the main floor of the Library.

The presentation will offer a historical background to the arrival of the largest group of manumitted slaves to the Upper Miami Valley and a focus upon the resolution of those acting in fear to deny their “ownership identity” within the region.
