YWCA to host author
PIQUA ― The YWCA Connections Group will welcome author Theresa James to their Tuesday, Oct. 16 meeting at the Upper Valley Career Center, The Cornerstone, on Looney Road from 11:45 a.m. –to 1 p.m. (Please note the change in date and location for this luncheon meeting.)
James’ book, “Healing Tears,” is a memoir of her personal tragedy from July 1998, when her ex-husband broke into her house and murdered her three children before killing himself. James will share her personal story and journey of grief and healing with the group.
Cost is $9 for YWCA members and $10 for non-members. Payment is due at the door and reservations not paid will be invoiced. The meal will be catered by the Cornerstone Café students. Reservations are due by Monday, Oct. 15, by calling the YWCA at 773-6626.
Book sale upcoming
MIAMI COUNTY — Friends of the Troy-Miami County Public Library will be holding their semi-annual book sale Thursday through Sunday, Oct. 18-21, at the Miami County Fairgrounds, 650 N. County Road 25-A’, Troy.
Hours will be: Members’ Preview Night on Oct. 18, 6-8 p.m. (memberships available at the door); and 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Oct. 19-21.
A great selection of books, puzzles, DVDs, special titles, and old books will be available, with prices starting at 25 cents. Sunday is $1 per bag of books and all specials are half price. All proceeds will be used for the Summer Reading Club, Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library, other literacy efforts, and special purchases for the library.

Y to offer SNL event
PIQUA — The Miami County YMCA Piqua Branch is offering a Saturday Night Live event on Saturday, Oct. 13, for youth in kindergarten through sixth grade. This will be a fun-filled night with swimming, gym games, and the Youth Center. Pizza and lemonade will be served at the Youth Center.
Drop off begins at 7 p.m. and pick up is at 11:30 p.m. Saturday. Register at the Piqua Branch or over the phone at 773-9622. The cost is $10 for members and $16 for non-members.

Flight ground school set
TROY — With new medical reforms for pilots, more people are able to enjoy general aviation. Perhaps you have always wanted to fly, but you don’t know where to begin. The dream of obtaining your pilot license is possible. Begin your flight journey at WACO.
WACO offers Flight Ground School and there is still room in the fall session. The class must have a minimum of four class participants. Ground school will be taught in 11 class sessions on Wednesday nights at WACO Air Museum from 6:30-8:30 p.m. Please visit www.wacoairmuseum.org, under the Learning Center tab, for more information, including fees and materials. Pete Demers, who will be the instructor for the ground school, brings a wealth of experience in aviation education spanning the last 15 years. He has over 4,000 flight hours as a flight instructor, has managed an FAA-approved Part 141 Flight School as chief flight instructor, served as pilot and company flight instructor for a part 135 charter operator in the Piper Navajo/Chieftain, and was selected as the FAA’s Flight Instructor of the Year for the Southern Region in 2013. Demers is manager of Ground Training at PSA and also serves as a volunteer at the WACO Air Museum.
