Library Friends offer scholarship

PIQUA — The Friends of the Piqua Public Library is accepting applications for a $1,500 scholarship to residents of Piqua to further their post-high school education in any accredited college, trade, vocational, nursing school or health facility. Additionally, a scholarship of $500 will be provided to a runner-up.

The Friends of the Piqua Public Library is a non-profit organization created to support the library through advocacy, fund-raising, and sponsorship of programs. By offering a scholarship to a deserving student with a love of books, the Friends of the Library will be perpetuating its mission. Applicants will be asked to write an essay on “The Book I Will Never Forget.”

Applications may be obtained from counselors at Piqua High School, Lehman Catholic High School, the Upper Valley Career Center, and Edison after Nov. 15. Applications will also be available at the Piqua Public Library and must be returned no later than March 20, 2018. The winning recipient will be notified by May 1.

Financial aid event set

PIQUA — Piqua High School will host a financial aid meeting for college-bound students on Wednesday, Nov. 1, in the school library. All parents of current PHS students are invited to attend. Please contact Beth Rosenkranz at 773-6314 with any questions.

Larson to speak at luncheon

PIQUA — Dr. Doreen Larson will present “Your Holiday Survival Kit” at the YWCA Monthly Luncheon Series on Nov. 8, at 11 a.m. The program, which is free and open to the public, will be followed by a noon luncheon ($6/person).

“Thanksgiving, Christmas and the related holiday events can overwhelm both individuals and families,” said Dr. Larson, the fifth president of Edison State Community College and its first female president. “I will share some basics to understanding the psychological roots of holiday stress and provide some easy steps to offset those holiday stressors and more fully enjoy family, friends and food!”

A UVMC nurse will also be available from 10:15-11 a.m. for free blood pressure and glucose screenings.

Reservations for the luncheon must be made by Monday, Nov. 6, by calling the YWCA at 773-6626. The YWCA is handicapped-accessible.

UVCC to hold kids’ class

PIQUA — Join the Upper Valley Career Center Early Childhood students for the “Owl for You” class on Monday, Nov. 13, from 6-7 p.m. The class is open to children 3 years old through kindergarten and will be taught by instructors and students of the Career Center Early Childhood Education and Care Program students.

“Little ones in the class will create a lifetime of memories while making this one-of-a-kind keepsake artwork for a special someone for the holidays,” said Beth Royer-DeLong, YWCA program director.
