Golf scramble set for May 13

PIQUA — The Upper Miami Valley Young Life annual Golf Classic will be Saturday, May 13, with breakfast at 7 a.m. and a shotgun start at 7:30 a.m. at Echo Hills Golf Course, Piqua.

This is the 23nd outing and the cost to play is $75 or $300 per foursome, which includes breakfast, lunch, green fees, cart and prizes. The format will be a four-player best ball scramble. Hole sponsors are $150. There will be a $100 putting contest at the end of the tournament that everyone will have a shot to win, a hole in one car and many prize holes.

A steak/chicken dinner will follow the scramble for all participants.

This annual golf outing is to support the work of Young Life in the Upper Miami Valley area. Young Life is a non-denominational, international Christian outreach for teenagers. Its purpose is to introduce the Christian faith into the everyday lives of young people and their families, and connect them back to the local churches. This is done through a variety of clubs, meetings, basketball league and activities throughout the week with 450 plus teens per week in the Upper Miami Valley area.

Swim, dive team registration set

PIQUA — Registration for Tecumseh Woods swim and dive teams, including Mighty Mites will be held Monday, May 1 from 4:30-6:30 at Washington Primary School in Piqua. Both pool members and non-members are encouraged to join the team.

Swimmers ages 3-5 will practice three times a week and will swim with assistance as needed before home meets. Swimmers, age 5 through seniors in high school, will practice Monday through Friday mornings and divers will practice three times a week.

Poco Loco Swim Shop will be present during registration for suit fittings.

Betsy South and Kris Stewart will be returning to coach swimmers.

Edison students host poetry event

PIQUA — Edison State Community College students, Ali and Claire Borgerding of Minster and Marie Ewing of Troy are hosting the national poetry event, Poem In Your Pocket Day on Thursday, April 27, at noon in room 456 on the Piqua Campus.

The event is a special occasion to approach, share, and recite all kinds of poetry. This free event is open to the community and attendees are encouraged to bring a poem to share with the group.

Guest speakers of the event will include Edison State President Dr. Doreen Larson and professors Marva Archibald, Vivian Blevins, Tom Looker, Melinda Spivey, Dustin Wenrich, and Debra Williamson.

Healthy Kids Day set

TROY — On Saturday, April 22, from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., the Miami County YMCA is celebrating Healthy Kids Day® with a free community event that will help families find fun through active play and educational opportunities to improve health and well-being. Healthy Kids Day takes place at the Robinson Branch, 3060 S. County Road 25-A, Troy.

As part of the Y’s commitment to strengthening community by addressing critical gaps in health and education, Healthy Kids Day will encourage kids and parents to commit to keeping the body and mind active now and throughout the summer.

At Healthy Kids Day, the nation’s largest health day for kids, families will enjoy a variety of YMCA activities such as: a fun run, bounce house, obstacle course, mini boat races, kids Zumba, crafts, and more! There will also be prizes given away to kids in attendance.
