Ducks to drop on Saturday

PIQUA — Nearly 2,000 rubber ducks will “fly” during the first-ever Mainstreet Piqua Rockin’ River Duck Drop at 6 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 1, at Lock 9 Park.

The yellow and red ducks will be dropped into the Miami River by a PSC Crane and Rigging crane at in the area behind the former Decker’s building. They will then travel approximately 3/10 of a mile to the bike path bridge, where a chute will placed. The first duck that makes its way through the finish line chute will earn the “owner” $1000 cash! The second prize is a $500 landscaping makeover donated by Lillicrap Mulch and Timber Sales. The third duck through the chute will win a $250 shopping spree at Barclay’s Men’s-Women’s Clothier in downtown Piqua. The last-place duck is also a winner, with the prize being a rocker/recliner donated by Town and Country Furniture.

Jim Oda, director of the Piqua Public Library, Oda will be the event emcee, giving a running commentary on the ducks’ progress.

“We hope there will be a big crowd of people who come out to watch …” said Lorna Swisher, executive director of Mainstreet Piqua. “We have had so many people from throughout the community adopt a duck, we are anticipating a nice crowd.”

Susie’s Big Dipper, a regular food vendor at the Rock Piqua Riverfront Concert Series, will have grilled chicken dinners available shortly after 6 p.m. and there will also

be pop, water, beer and wine available for purchase.

The Rock Piqua! Riverfront Concert Series final concert of the year will start at 7 p.m. with You vs. Yesterday. At 8 p.m. The Weekend Classic will take the stage and at 10 p.m. the headline act The Orphan and the Poet will take the stage. There is no cost to attend either the duck drop or the concert.

The Quackmaster sponsor for the Rockin’ River Duck Drop is Piqua Guitar and Unity National Bank is the Top Duck Sponsor. Darling Duck sponsors include Soak ‘n Suds Car Wash, Ticon Paving, PSC Crane and Rigging and Miami Valley Centre Mall. POWW (Protect Our Water-Ways) is also assisting with “duck wrangling” responsibilities.
