AARP seeks tax aid volunteers

MIAMI COUNTY — Make a difference as a volunteer with the AARP Foundation Tax-Aide, the nation’s largest volunteer-run tax preparation and assistance service. Your time and talent will help Ohioans ensure they are maximizing and protecting their tax refunds.

Millions of low- to moderate-income people, especially those 60 and older, need help preparing their taxes. Volunteer for AARP foundation Tax-Aide and make sure they get all the deductions and credits they deserve.

Medicare checkups slated

PIQUA — Ohio Senior Health Insurance Information Program (OSHIIP) liaisons will be on hand to meet one-on-on with individuals for Medicare checkups at the YWCA Piqua on Tuesday, Nov. 1, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Individual consultation will focus on traditional Medicare, Medicare Advantage (HMO’s, PPO’s and PFF’s) along with Medicare Prescription Drug Coverage (Part D).

Appointments are necessary and space is limited, so seniors are advised to call early to sign up for a time slot. “This individual consultation is an opportunity for individuals to meet with and discuss concerns, ask questions and get answers to questions about Medicare coverage,” said Beth Royer-DeLong, YWCA program director.

Appointments can be made by stopping at the YWCA Piqua at 418 N. Wayne St. or by calling (937) 773-6626. The YWCA is handicapped-accessible.

Vets health fair set

TROY — Miami County Public Health (MCPH) will be hosting a Veterans Day Health Fair on Monday, Nov. 7, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. for veterans and widows of veterans. MCPH has partnered with Miami County Veteran’s Services, Miami County Dental Clinic, Miami County Recovery Council, Miami Valley Honor Flight and Trinity Reiki to offer a variety of services.

It will be held at the Hobart Center for County Government, 510 W. Water St., Troy.

Veterans are encouraged to come to this fair to get questions answered about benefits that may be available to them and how to apply for benefits as well. MCPH will provide flu and pneumonia shots, blood pressure screens, BMI (body mass index) check, hearing and vision screenings, free HIV testing and diabetic foot checks. Trinity Reiki will provide information about the balance of body, mind & spirit and Miami County Dental Clinic will provide dental screens. Miami County Recovery Council and the Miami Valley Honor Flight will both provide briefings to attendees.

There will also be food and refreshments provided during the lunch hour period.

“We are proud to offer this health fair to veterans again this year,” said Miami County Public Health, Health Commissioner Dennis Propes. “The health fair was a great success last year and we are eager to make it another great success this year.”

Knit for cancer

PIQUA — Suzie Hawkes will coordinate a knitting activity for cancer patients at 10 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 3, at the YWCA Piqua. Participants will be knitting or crocheting hats and other items to donate to cancer patients at UVMC, and are asked to bring their own yarn, knitting needles or crochet hooks.

“Anyone can donate items they have made at home if they are unable to attend the Nov. 3 get-together,” Hawkes said. “We plan to do this each month on the first Thursday and encourage others to come and join in this very special project.”

DAR offering breakfast

TROY — The Piqua Lewis-Boyer DAR will be serving breakfast to Miami Valley Veterans on Wednesday, Nov. 2, at the Veterans Museum of Miami Valley, held at the Masonic Lodge located at 107 W. Main St. in Troy. After serving breakfast, the chapter will hold their members-only annual meeting.

Conferences planned

COVINGTON — Parent/teacher conferences will be held at Covington Schools on Thursday, Nov. 10, from 1:30-9 p.m. Parents are encouraged to schedule an appointment through the use of the online scheduler. There is a link to the online scheduler on the district webpage. If you have trouble with the scheduler, or if you do not have access to the internet, please contact your child’s school.

Covington students will be dismissed at 1 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 10. Covington Schools will not be in session for all students on Friday, Nov. 11.
