Education float offered

DARKE COUNTY — The Stillwater Watershed Education Float will be held from 8:15 a.m. to 1 p.m. Friday, June 17, beginning at Greenville Creek, and travelling from Arcanum-Bears Mill Road to Hahn Road.

The Miami and Darke SWCD is trying a new section this year and are hoping members of the community will join together along with the Miami County Park District as participants travel Greenville Creek within the Stillwater River Watershed. The journey will begin with registration between 8:15-8:45 a.m. at Arcanum Bears Mill Road, then participants will have a safety talk and if all goes according to plan, will get on the water a little after 9 a.m.

Participants will see all there is to see along the banks of Greenville Creek and then take out along Hahn Road, learn a little more about the Stillwater River Watershed and then enjoy a lunch, tentatively ending the day around 1 p.m. The cost for this day is $5 to pay for lunch. FFA hosts first Agricultural Awareness Day

WEST MILTON — Milton-Union MVCTC FFA hosted their first annual Agricultural Awareness Day for the Milton-Union Elementary, grades kindergarten through fourth grade.

The purpose of the event was to educate students on the topic of agriculture. FFA member and chapter reporter Jessica Leffew planned and designed the curriculum for the day. Her goal is to educate students in the surrounding area on the importance of agriculture in our daily lives. She hopes to continue this tradition and to watch it grow in the years to come.

Thirty-Four FFA members participated in the curriculum for nine agricultural-related stations, including: tractor safety, Project WILD (natural resources), Seed Germination, Horses, Cattle, Swine, Goats, Rabbits, and various Poultry. MOre than 400 students from Milton-Union were able to participate in the day’s activities. The elementary students were able to experience various aspects of the agriculture industry and enjoyed the opportunity to see and learn in a hands-on setting.
