Troy man arraigned on 13 counts of rape

MIAMI COUNTY — On Thursday morning, Benjie Van Winkle, 42, of Troy, was arraigned on a grand jury indictment of 13 counts of first-degree felony rape charges for allegedly violating two female victims under the age of 12 since March 2015.

Van Winkle entered a plea of not guilty.

Seven counts were for the alleged rape of a child under the age of 13 and six counts for a child under the age of 10. He was originally charged with 27 counts in Miami County Municipal Court.

Judge Christopher Gee set Van Winkle’s bond at $750,000. His pre-trial was set for Tuesday, March 22, with Judge Jeannine Pratt presiding.

According to law enforcement officials, the alleged sexual assaults occurred outside of Fletcher in Brown Township, in Troy as well as in Champaign County. According to reports, Van Winkle confessed to the allegations during the initial interview with authorities.
