Community dinner season underway

It is now officially community dinner season here in the village of Covington. This is the time for several community organizations to hold a yearly fundraiser dinner. The first of these community dinners will be held this coming Friday, Feb. 21, as St. Teresa Catholic Church will again be hosting their delicious fish fries. The church is located just east of town, at 6925 W. U.S. Route 36, and will again be offering four opportunities for delicious fish dinners. The first will be this coming Friday from 4:30-7 p.m. in the parish hall. Please mark your calendars for the other three fish fries on Friday, March 6, March 20, and April 3. Serving times for each will be 4:30-7 p.m. St. Teresa’s fish fries feature their traditional tasty all-you-can-eat golden brown fish, their highly anticipated green beans, applesauce and a roll. The cost is still only $8 each, and coffee is included. And desserts and drinks will be available for purchase at a small additional cost. Easy carry-out meals are available as well, so please make plans to come out and enjoy the best fish fries in the area.

The second of the upcoming community dinners is the annual St. John’s Lutheran Church Fastnacht Dinner, taking place next Tuesday, Feb. 25, or “Fat Tuesday.” Lent is here again, and here in Covington we may not celebrate Fat Tuesday as they do on Bourbon Street in New Orleans. The not-so-crazy Fat Tuesday tradition in our village consists of a delicious meal in the basement of the white church at the corner of Bridge and Wall streets.

The St. John’s Lutheran Fastnacht dinner this year, as is tradition, will consist of chicken, mashed potatoes, noodles, green beans, a roll, pickled red beets, applesauce, and homemade crullers. Again, the dinner will be Tuesday, Feb. 25, from 4:30-6:30 p.m. Carry-out dinners are available as well for only $5. A free will donation will be accepted for those dining in the church basement. St. John’s Lutheran Church is totally handicapped accessible, so please plan to attend this yearly Covington tradition.

And the last dinner to announce for this column is the annual Covington High School Scholarship Fund Spaghetti Supper. It will be held on Wednesday, March 4, and serving times will be from 4:30-6:30 p.m. in the K-8 school cafeteria. All proceeds from the spaghetti supper dinner go to the Covington Schools Scholarship Fund Program.

The menu features all-you-can-eat Italian spaghetti and garlic toast. The meal also includes homemade coleslaw, dessert, and a drink. The cost is a meager $6 for adults, $5 for senior citizens, and $3 for children under age 12. Carry-out meals will also be available. Further, the March music concert will be held at the high school gym the same evening. All community members are invited to attend both events. And the community scholarship fund drive is currently underway for 2020. Donations to the scholarship fund may be sent to guidance counselor Karen Brackman at Covington High School, 807 Chestnut St., Suite A, Covington, OH 45318 through March 20. The community’s continued support of the Covington Scholarship Fund is greatly appreciated. For more information, call 473-2856.

And when calling Covington High School, or to anyone else here in Covington, don’t forget to include the 937 area code now. Otherwise, you’ll sit waiting on the phone for a long time, waiting on the ring, and wondering why no one is answering your call. Your columnist may have accidentally done this once or twice in the past few weeks. Unfortunately, Sarah no longer connects your call here in Covington, like she did for Andy Taylor, Barney Fife, and the residents of Mayberry. All in the name of progress!
