TROY — Luke Vannus and Katie Robinson were introduced as 2019 Miami County Fair Royalty following the king and queen contest on Friday evening.

Robinson, 18, is the daughter of Scott and Lori Robinson and is sponsored by the Leprechauns 4-H Club. She will be attending the University of Cincinnati this fall to study business.

Although this was Robinson’s first time entering the royalty contest, she is well familiar with the competition. In 1990, her mother, Lori, was named Miami County Fair Queen, and her cousin, Sarah Geardthart, won the honor in 2003.

“It was very big for both my mom and I,” Robinson said. “Winning the competition was very sentimental.”

Aside from the family ties to the competition, Robinson said a big reason for her entering was due to her experiences within 4-H.

“I’m the president of The Leprechauns 4-H Club, and a big part of that is representing our club,” she said. “I remember looking up to the older girls when I was young, so I wanted the kids in the club now to be able to look up to me.”

Vannus, 16, is the son of Harry and Mary Vannus and is sponsored by Indian Creek 4-H Club. He will be a junior at Newton High School.

Vannus is not new to the royalty contest, having been named first runner-up during the 2018 Miami County Fair royalty competition.

“I knew I felt more comfortable this time after going through the process last year,” Vannus said. “I felt really good about it.”

Vannus said he enjoys the roles and responsibility that comes with being fair king.

“I like doing stuff like this where it puts you out in public and you can be the representative for something,” he said.

Runners-up for the king included second runner-up Carter Gilbert and first runner-up Brayden Peake.

Gilbert is the son of Michelle West and Adam Gilbert. Peake is the son of Jessica Peake and Richard Peake.

Runners-up for queen included second runner-up Alicia Miller and first runner-up Whitley Gross.

Miller is the daughter of Dean and Kathleen Miller, and Gross is the daughter of Matt and Amanda Gross.

A prince and princess were also crowned during Friday’s ceremonies.

Jacob Shoemaker, 8 ½, son of Brian and Annie Shoemaker, won the title of prince. Jacob is sponsored by Just 4-Fun 4-H Club.

After being crowned prince, Jacob said he was not nervous at all while being on stage and that he feels “good” about winning the title. His favorite parts of the fair include “riding the rides, the goats, and sleeping in a camper,” to name a few.

Jacob is a Cloverbud and will be a member of the Just 4-Fun 4-H Club this next year, as he enters third grade.

Katie Quinn, 7, daughter of Leo and Kristi Quinn, was named princess. Katie is sponsored by Bits N Pieces 4-H Club.

Katie said this was the first year she entered the fair royalty competition, and she feels “really good” about winning the title of princess.

Her absolute favorite part of the fair is “eating all the good food,” and her favorite treat is a slushie.

Katie is a Cloverbud and will be entering the second grade this year.
