PEF awards $295,500 in scholarships

PIQUA — Piqua Education Foundation (PEF) was created in 1984 by a group of Piqua community members who recognized that Piqua High School graduates are key component to the community’s continued success.

PEF’s guiding principle is to enhance educational opportunities for Piqua City School students, graduates, and staff. The endowment fund created by the PEF founders has been doing exactly this by awarding college scholarships for Piqua High School graduates and education grants for Piqua City School staff.

Today, graduating seniors are awarded scholarships based on academic excellence and financial need. Students have the opportunity to re-apply for scholarships for up to four years of college. This year, PEF is pleased to have awarded $295,500 in scholarships with 89 scholarships to the class of 2015 and 94 scholarships to the classes of 2012, 2013, and 2014.

In keeping with the mission to enhance educational opportunities, PEF awarded over $25,000 this year in educational grants to Piqua City School staff members. These educational grants help enhance the classroom experience for Piqua students and provide lasting effects on their futures.

Some of the past projects made possible by the PEF education grants over the years include Patent Pending, Muse Machine, Science Olympiad, and Young Astronauts. This year’s grants included an online Time Magazine subscription, stability balls for the elementary buildings, skiing at Mad River Mountain for intermediate students, and a set of chrome books to create a “classroom in the clouds” for junior high science students and another set to help facilitate learning in the Credit Recovery class at the high school.

In past years, PEF has recognized PHS graduates at the annual Celebration of Education Banquet. Over the years, many PHS graduates have shared their stories which all start with beginnings in Piqua. This year to recognize the PEF scholarship recipients and education grant recipients, PEF hosted a “meet and greet” reception at PHS before Senior Class Night. With over 200 people in attendance, the event highlighted Piqua pride.

Thank you to all who have generously donated to Piqua Education Foundation over the years. Your dollars have positively impacted many lives. Congratulations to the Piqua High School class of 2015 and the PEF scholarship recipients. For more information about Piqua Education Foundation, please email
