TROY — A child was found safe in the vehicle that was stolen from the Big Mike’s BP on Archer Drive early Wednesday morning.
According to Capt. Shawn McKinney, Troy Police responded to a car theft with a 2-year-old boy inside around 6 a.m. Wednesday morning.
The 38-year-old mother of the child said she went into the gas station to buy cigarettes, but left her car running with her child inside. While she was inside the gas station, someone stole the vehicle. When she returned to the parking lot, her black Nissan vehicle was gone.
“I ran in there for two seconds,” the mother stated to the 9-1-1 dispatcher.
Police responded to the scene and began a search for the car and child. Nearly 15 minutes after the search began, the Miami County Sheriff’s Office found the vehicle on Peters Road near the Montgomery County line. The 2-year-old boy was found safe inside of the vehicle.
The sheriff’s office on Wednesday also responded to another car theft, a white Honda Accord, which was left running unattended and was stolen. The Honda was reportedly recovered at Third Street in Dayton near the Veteran’s Cemetery around 3 p.m.
No suspects have been identified. Miami County Sheriff’s Office detectives and evidence technicians are working on the incident, according to Lt. Mike Whaley.
Capt. McKinney said charges may be pending against the woman, who has not been identified, for leaving a car running while unattended. The citation would be a misdemeanor traffic violation if charges are filed.
