COVINGTON — The Covington FFA collaborated with the Houston FFA chapters to host their fourth annual “Cardboard City” on Oct. 13, at the UVCC Willowbrook Center. The event began at 6 p.m. Oct. 13, and ended at 7 a.m. Oct. 14.
Students were permitted to bring blankets, warm clothes, and all the cardboard they wanted to construct their shelter for the evening. The purpose of the event is for students to live a night in the shoes of those less fortunate than themselves.
The students were not permitted any electronic devices for the duration of the event and were only permitted a “soup kitchen” meal provided by the FFA officers of each chapter.
Students assembled 120 care packages to be given out to homeless shelters for those in need. The packages included Band-aids, tissues, toothbrushes and toothpaste, as well as new socks and granola bars.
The Covington FFA officers led a reflection discussion before “lights out” and students were quick to state that they are fortunate to not have to live like this each night and that they feel for those in need.
