NEWTON TOWNSHIP – A large fire at a farm at the corner of St. Rt. 721 and Laughman Road in Newton Township destroyed a large barn, damaged a house, and destroyed farm equipment on Monday afternoon.
Firefighters were called to the scene minutes after 4 p.m. and firefighters arrived to find a barn fully-engulfed and another nearby barn and home beginning to burn.
First reports said that there were animals inside the barn. Witnesses on the scene reported a number of head of livestock running loose as firefighters arrived on the scene. It is unknown if any animals perished.
Mutual aide was requested from as many as eight surrounding departments in both Miami and Darke County.
Burning embers from the blaze started a field fire north of the structure fire and fire departments were forced to divide resources to battle both fires.
At around 4:30, a structure fire was reported at a garage in Bradford, further taxing manpower and resources.
At least one firefighter was treated at the scene for what appeared to be heat exhaustion. No other injuries were reported.
Pleasant Hill firefighters having command at the scene reported the fire as “under control” at 5:55 p.m. but will be on the scene for an extended period of time.
We will provide further details as they become available.
