MIAMI COUNTY — The 10th annual Kids’ Triathlon will kick off this Sunday for children 4-14 with a new benefactor at the Troy Aquatic Park.

According to coordinator Cheryl Chaney, more than 200 children are registered to run, bike and swim, with proceeds to benefit The Clubhouse organization.

The event is sponsored by the Robinson Fund, Dayton Children’s Hospital and Vectren. Last year’s race had more than 300 children participate.

The event begins at 7:30 a.m. with a swim at the Troy Aquatic Park, and bike ride in the Hobart Arena parking lot and bike path, and finishes with a run at Troy Memorial Stadium. The event also has approximately 80 to 100 volunteers to assist children throughout the course.

There will be awards for the top three girls and boys in each age group. All children must wear helmets.

Chaney said it’s the dedication of the event’s volunteers that makes the event so worthwhile each year.

“They all have a big heart for kids. They have a big impact on how the event runs each year,” she said. “My volunteers know the course and know they are responsible for the safety of all the children on the course.” Chaney also credits her husband, Billy, for his assistance each year.

Chaney, a triathlon competitor and coach, said she was inspired at an awards ceremony when participants were challenged to encourage others to take up the sport.

The Clubhouse organization is a free, faith-based after school program for children guided by teen and adult workers throughout the program. The organization provided tutoring and homework help, character development, sports, arts and computer opportunities. Children in second through sixth grades may participate in the program which is free. The Clubhouse has three locations, including the Tipp City Clubhouse at The Avenue Youth Center, Troy West location at the Garden Manor Apartment complex and the Troy East location at St. Patrick Catholic Church.

Registration is $20 per participant, with additional siblings in the same family $15 each. This fee includes a T-shirt, finisher’s medal for each participant, goody bag, and post-race refreshments. Register online at www.speedy-feet.com. Same-day registration is available.
