Scholarship recipients announced

PIQUA — Emily Wildenhaus and Aaron VanPelt have been named the 2015 recipients of the Betty Hemmert Scholarship and the Mills/Bogart Brothers Scholarship.

The Mills/Bogart Brothers scholarship was established to honor two sets of brothers that have established themselves in the field of vocal performance. The scholarship is presented by the Piqua Area Chamber of Commerce to Piqua residents who are pursuing a degree in music, music education or the performing arts at an accredited college, music school or other post-high school institution.

The Betty Hemmert Scholarship was established to honor Hemmert’s long time dedication as a vocal music educator in Piqua. It benefits students from both Lehman Catholic and Piqua high schools who are currently attending or will be attending an accredited college, music school or other post high school institution. The student must show that he or she will be, or is pursuing music, music education or the performing arts field of study.

Aaron VanPelt is the recipient of a $2,000 Mills/Bogart Brothers Scholarship. A graduate of Piqua High School, VanPelt will be a senior at Wright State University in the fall and is studying to be a music educator. He was the most improved trumpet player at Wright State for the 2014-15 school year. In his first year at WSU, he performed in two solo trumpet recitals, secured a position in the WSU Wind Symphony, and performed as a member of the WSU Trumpet Ensemble at the Ohio International Guild Conference. He is the son of Alan and Reba VanPelt.

Emily Wildenhaus is the recipient of a $1,000 Betty Hemmert Scholarship. She graduated from Lehman Catholic High School in May 2013, and was a member of the National Honor Society and Piqua Top 100. Wildenhaus auditioned and became a member of the only co-ed a cappella group on their campus, the Seahawkappellas. She is a soloist, dance captain/choreographer, soprano section leader and assistant music director of the Seahawkappellas. Wildenhaus is the daughter of Donna and John Wildenhaus.
