PIQUA — With the title of the oldest living priest in the Archdiocese of Cincinnati, Father Angelo C. Caserta marked his 99th birthday on Tuesday, Dec. 5.
In celebration of his birthday, St. Boniface Parish will host a spaghetti dinner, featuring a favorite of “Father Ang” — Italian supreme sauce — on Saturday, Dec. 9, from 4:30-7:30 p.m. in the Caserta Activity Center. 218 S. Downing St. There is no cost for the dinner. Attendees will have the opportunity to make donations to Fr. Ang’s beloved scholarship fund at Piqua Catholic School.
Fr. Ang is a Piqua native, one of 12 children born to Charles and Nancy Caserta. When he was a second grader at St. Boniface School, he dreamed of becoming a priest. After graduating from Piqua Catholic High School in 1936, he entered the seminary, and was ordained into the priesthood on Feb. 24, 1945 — 72 years ago.
In 1984, Fr. Ang came home when he was appointed as pastor at St. Boniface Catholic Church, a position he held until 1993. While at St. Boniface, he spearheaded a building fund drive for the addition of St. Boniface School’s activity center, established no-cost tuition, and started perpetual Eucharistic adoration, which continues today in St. Clare Chapel.
Due to his frail health, Fr. Ang will not be able to attend. However a program of photos, stories, letters, and much reminiscing is planned.
