MIAMI COUNTY — A local man was sentenced Thursday to prison for robbing Ulbrich’s Market and Walmart in Piqua.
Steve A. Jones, 37, of Piqua, was sentenced on two separate charges of second-degree felony robbery in Miami County Common Pleas Court. He was sentenced to six years in prison for robbing Walmart and four years for robbing Ulbrich’s Market, which is to be served concurrently with his first sentence.
The reported robbery at Ulbrich’s Market took place in early November 2016. An employee was working the cash register when a white male subject leaned over the counter and began taking money out of the register. The employee tried stopping Jones, and he started hitting her. A customer also attempted to intervene, and Jones hit the customer before running out of the store, according to previous reports.
There were no injuries reported, and there were no reports of Jones having a weapon.
The employee provided Piqua police with a good description of the suspect, and they were able to find him shortly after the incident. He was located walking just a couple blocks away by officers responding to the area, according to previous reports.
The employee identified the man who was taken into custody as the one who was in the store and took the money. The stolen money was also reportedly found in his pants pocket.
According to past Piqua police reports, the reported robbery at Walmart took place in August. A male subject stole an A/C unit from the store. An employee made contact with the suspect. The suspect punched the employee and continued to try to leave. A bystander got involved and kept the suspect there.
Once Jones is released from prison, he will be on mandatory post-release control for three years.
Jones received 144 days of jail credit at the time of his sentencing.
