Troy man sentenced to 30 years for sex crimes

Eric Massie guilty of attempted rape and unlawful sexual conduct with minors

A Troy man was sentenced to serve 30 years on various unlawful sexual conduct with a minor and rape charges in Miami County Common Pleas Court on Monday.

Eric Massie, 43, of Troy, pleaded guilty to an amended indictment charging him with one count of third-degree felony gross sexual imposition, six counts of second-degree felony unlawful sexual conduct with a minor and two counts of second-degree felony attempted rape.

Massie entered into the joint plea agreement to spend three decades in prison. He faced up to 83 years maximum.

“I’m sorry for what I put everybody through,” Massie said. “It won’t ever happen again.”

Miami County Assistant Prosecutor Paul Watkins called Massie’s actions “abhorrent.”

“He’s preyed upon young men in the community for two decades,” Watkins said.

Judge Jeannie Pratt followed the joint recommendation of 30 years so Massie will “never be able to victimize a child again.”

“You, sir, are a predator and your conduct sickens the court,” Pratt said. Pratt also said words could not describe

“the horror” of the crimes Massie committed and called it one of the worst cases she’s ever seen.

Massie was labeled a Tier II sex offender and must register for 25 years in-person. He was given 444 days of jail time credit. The family of the victim was present and submitted a statement to the court, but did not speak during their opportunity during the hearing.

More victims were identified during the course of the Troy Police Department’s investigation. The gross sexual imposition charges stemmed from three additional victims, now adults, from 1995 up to the 2016 charge, which led to Massie’s incarceration.

According to reports, a minor came forward to Troy Police Department authorities in June 2016 and claimed Massie had engaged in inappropriate sexual contact over the course of five years. The victim said he had been sexually abused since the age of 11 at Massie’s Morehead Street address. The victim claimed he would pretend to be asleep during the encounters.

According to reports, Massie voluntarily spoke with detectives and gave them consent to search his home on June 10, 2016. Officers located pornographic DVDs and multiple pieces of marijuana paraphernalia inside the home. An officer also located a journal with juvenile male pictures cut out from magazines and taped to the pages. Several of the pictures depicted cartoon captions with inappropriate statements drawn on them. Massie admitted the journal was his, but stated it was “from a long time ago.” Massie later admitted to engaging in various sexual acts with the juvenile “nine to 10 times” before requesting to speak with a lawyer.

According to court records, Massie pleaded no contest and was found guilty of a sexually-oriented offense in Miami County Common Pleas Court in 1997. He was sentenced to serve three years of probation and register as a sexually oriented offender for 10 years.
