ELIZABETH TWP. — They may hail from a little country church, but the Cove Springs praise group will be performing on a much bigger stage this Sunday.
The Cove Springs praise group will be performing at 3:25 p.m. at the Fraze Pavilion stage as part of the fourth annual GospelFest, which will feature a headline performance by Tenth Avenue North at 7:30 p.m.
The band and its seven members auditioned to perform at the festival last spring. The group grabbed one of the 10 spots out of the 32 bands who tried out for the opportunity.
The members of the Cove Springs praise group include: Darin Williams, Ben and Julia Sutherly, Ann Horner, Wade Wilhelm, Cheryl Jackson and Erik Fine.
In anticipation for their live performance, the group recorded a CD entitled “Center of Our Joy,” which is a play off one of their favorite songs “Center of My Joy.”
The CD includes the band’s favorite gospel songs — with their unique twist.
“Most of the CD is cover songs, Darin is amazing at doing arrangements,” said band member Erik Fine. “He’ll take the song and he’ll throw another twist on it and change what note we sing. They are covers but yet some of them we’ve made into our own.”
GospelFest is free and open to the public. Gates open at 2:30 p.m. with performances beginning at 3 p.m. The Cove Springs praise group will perform their five songs beginning at 3:25 p.m.
“We had our last practice (Thursday) and we all just kept saying how surreal this opportunity is. I pinch myself thinking about being up there on that big stage and sharing this awesome experience with each other. We never thought we would be doing this yet, it’s almost here,” Fine said.
The CD will be available at the GospelFest as well as through the Cove Springs Church. All proceeds benefit the church’s music fund.
