PIQUA – An area man left a standing cornfield under his own power following a spectacular crash on Parker Drive, near Hetzler Road on Wednesday evening.
Authorities were called to the area on the report of a vehicle crashing into a corn field around 7:40 p.m.
First arriving units had difficulty locating the crash until witnesses pointed out where the vehicle had left the roadway and entered the corn.
According to witnesses, the dark-colored SUV was traveling down Parker Drive, a dead-end street, at a high rate of speed. The vehicle hit an incline area leading into the cornfield, went airborne for a significant distance, rolled, became airborne for a second time before landing on its wheels, approximately 75 yards into the field.
The driver was extremely disoriented when Piqua firefighters reached him but once removed from the vehicle was able to walk out of the field with assistance to a waiting medic unit. He was transported to Upper Valley Medical Center for treatment.
Miami County deputies indicate that the man suffered a medical condition that led to the crash.
