COVINGTON — The Covington Board of Education held a brief meeting Thursday evening, going over ongoing projects within the district.
The board approved contracting with Piqua Lumber to construct a storage building. The approved cost was $29,000.
“This is just the raising of the building,” Superintendent Gene Gooding said. The floor will be concrete, and the building will be 40 feet wide by 64 feet long.
In regard to projects at Covington High School, Gooding said that the improvements to the girls’ locker room and the gym were complete. The gym was repainted, and its floor was resurfaced. The banners were also taken down and moved to the gym in the new K-8 building.
The board then approved the purchase of an English Language Arts six-year curriculum program for grades seven and eight from Houghton-Mifflin. The cost was $20,811.
Gooding said that while the cost may seem high, “Over the six years, it’s not a bad expenditure, and of course, it’s what we’re here for.”
Gooding then provided an update on the One-to-One project, the goal of which is to give every student at Covington schools access to either an iPad for the younger students or a Chromebook for the rest of the students. Gooding said that they are on track for the classrooms in kindergarten through eighth grade to each have their own sets of Chromebooks to use. For high school students, the district is also on track for those students to be issued Chromebooks during open house and then to take those home.
“We’re ahead of the game,” Gooding said.
Gooding added that their safeguards to prevent students from using those Chromebooks to look at anything inappropriate will still be effective even when students take their Chromebooks home.
“He (District Network Coordinator Levi Smith) can control these devices as if they’re here,” Gooding said.
The board asked if there would be fees added to the students’ school fees for the computers. Gooding said that there will not be fees added this year, but next year they will likely have to add a nominal fee.
The board ended their meeting by going into executive session to discuss personnel. They took no action following the private session.
Board members Lee Harmon and Mark Miller were absent.
