Cox, 43, charged with multiple sex offenses

MIAMI COUNTY — On Friday, Charles Cox, 43, of Troy, was arraigned on various sex offense charges, including first-degree felony rape in Miami County Municipal Court.

Cox was also charged with seven counts of pandering obscenity involving minors and two counts of gross sexual imposition, all felonies. Cox was a resident at the Budget Inn on Archer Drive in Troy.

A pre-trial was set for July 20, with Judge Elizabeth Gutmann presiding. Cox’s bond was set for $800,000 cash.

In other news:

David Boyea, 33, filed a motion to waive his right to a jury of his peers and elected for a bench trial on two counts of attempted murder and felony aggravated burglary this week. A jury trial was set to begin on July 18.

Boyea also filed a motion to fire his public defender on July 13. The motion is pending. Boyea had wrote to the court requesting a continuance to allow him time to obtain his late mother’s life insurance to hire a private attorney for the case.

Boyea reportedly stabbed his ex-girlfriend and her new boyfriend in a hotel room at the America’s Best Inn and Suites on Feb. 6. The victims, Crystal Brooks, 33, and Steve Burns, 30, received multiple wounds during the incident. The trio worked together at the Troy Burger King. Brooks was residing at the motel at the time of the incident.

Boyea’s bond of $500,000 was continued.
