Card-making class planned

PIQUA — Teens and adults will want to join Deb Welker, instructor, to create one-of-a-kind Valentine’s Day cards on Monday, Jan. 9, from 6-7:30 p.m. at the YWCA Piqua.

“These unique cards will make an extra special gift for loved ones or friends,” said Welker. “We’ll use a wide variety of materials. which are included in the class fee.”

“What a fun way to surprise someone special for this holiday,” added Beth Royer-DeLong, YWCA program director.

YWCA to hold monthly luncheon

PIQUA — Join Suzie Hawkes, “Mistress of Fun,” to celebrate at the YWCA Monthly Luncheon on Wednesday, Jan. 11, at 11 a.m. There will be fun, games and lots of surprises in store to liven up the day to beat those January blahs.

“We will laugh and enjoy some fun games and activities to start the year off,” said Hawkes, adult program committee chairperson. “We can’t wait to bring out the party décor!”

The program is free and open to the public. A noon luncheon ($6/person) follows the program. Reservations for the program and luncheon must be made by Monday, Jan. 9.

A UVMC nurse will offer free blood pressure and glucose screenings from 10:15-11 a.m. The YWCA is handicapped-accessible.

SWCD scholarships available

MIAMI COUNTY — The Miami Soil and Water Conservation District is offering two $750 scholarship awards for the purpose of continuing higher education at a two or four year college or university.

Qualifications for applying students include:

• Must be a Miami County, Ohio resident.

• Must be an Agriculture or Natural Resources major.

• Must be enrolled for fall quarter/semester of 2017.

• May be a prior Miami SWCD scholarship recipient.

The award will be used towards the student’s tuition and fees and will be processed through the scholarship office of the chosen school.

Send completed applications, along with high school or college transcripts and three letters of recommendations from three references listed on the application form to: Miami SWCD Scholarship Committee, 1330 N. County Road 25-A; Suite C, Troy, OH 45373.

Deadline for applications to be postmarked with recommendations is Friday, March 17.

Food safety training offered

TROY — The Ohio State University Extension, Miami County, has partnered with TAP (Training Achievement Program) Series to offer an online version of the Level 2 Food Safety training, which meets all Ohio Department of Health requirements.

Participants can complete the online course at their own speed and at a time that works for you. Once training is completed, participants will take a proctored certification exam in Troy.

The deadline to meet this requirement is March 2017. A registration fee of $150 is non-refundable for both the online class and exam. There is an additional fee of $25 if the selected exam date is rescheduled.

The ServSafe Manager exam is proctored by an OSU Extension Educator who is a Certified ServSafe Proctor.

Exam dates are:

• Feb. 1 from 1-4 p.m, with registration due by Jan. 3

• Feb. 6 from 9 a.m. to noon, register by Jan. 6

• Feb. 24, 9 a.m. to noon, register by Jan. 27

Exams will take place in the Miami County Courthouse, OSU Extension Office meeting room, 201 W. Main St., Troy.
