COVINGTON – A Marion County man is in the Miami County jail after a resident and his family teamed up to take down the would-be perpetrator.
Robert Molihan, Jr., 43, of Marion County, Ohio, allegedly broke into a home in the 5500 block of North Rangeline Road, just outside of Covington late Friday evening with the intention of stealing weapons.
According to deputies, the family, including parents, their two children, and three nephews returned home from a family dinner to find Molihan attempting to steal weapons from the home.
The father got into a “physical altercation” with the suspect. While the struggle ensued, the mother and one of the boys retrieved family weapons. The boy retrieved a shotgun, loaded it, and gave it to his parent who then held the Molihan at gunpoint.
Sheriff’s deputies were hampered in a quick arrival by snow and rapidly deteriorating road conditions. They requested mutual aide from Covington police who arrived minutes later and took Molihan into custody without further incident.
Deputies did say that Molihan had “prior knowledge” that weapons were in the resident but did not say how he knew.
Molihan allegedly had an accomplice who dropped him off at the home and was to pick him up later. The accomplice has not yet been identified or apprehended.
Molihan was taken to the Miami County Jail where he is awaiting arraignment on a first-degree felony charge of Aggravated Burglary.
