PIQUA — Ulbrich’s Market was reportedly robbed Thursday evening, but the suspect did not get far.
The reported robbery at the market, located on the 400 block of South Wayne Street, took place at approximately 9:15 p.m. According to Deputy Chief Jason Preston of the Piqua Police Department, an employee was working the cash register when a white male subject leaned over the counter and began taking money out of the register.
“She tried stopping him, and he started hitting her,” Preston said.
A customer attempted to intervene and “the suspect also hit the customer and ran out,” according to Preston.
There were no injuries reported, and there were no reports of the suspect having a weapon.
The employee provided Piqua police with a good description of the suspect, and they were able to find him. “He was located walking just a couple blocks away by officers responding to the area,” Preston said.
The employee identified the man who was taken into custody as the one who was in the store and took the money. The stolen money was also reportedly found in his pants pocket.
The suspect, Steve A. Jones, 36, of Piqua, was charged with second-degree felony burglary, first-degree misdemeanor failure to comply, and first-degree misdemeanor resisting arrest. Jones reportedly resisted arrest by pulling away from the officers and fighting with them. Jones was also tazed before he was taken into custody.
Jones is currently incarcerated at the Miami County Jail and is awaiting arraignment.
