PIQUA — Five individuals were named recipients of the 2016 Pride of Workmanship Awards at the recent Piqua Rotary Club meeting. Chairman Randi Pearson indicated there have been 85 individuals who have received the award since its inception locally in 1999.

“The (Pride of Workmanship) program actually originated in 1975 at a Rotary club in Australia,” explained Pearson. “The objectives of that original program were to: a) promote vocational service; b) encourage pride of workmanship in all vocations; and c) provide an opportunity for Rotary to be involved in the community, particularly the business community.”

Members and guests were told the Pride of Workmanship program is “not a competition but rather a recognition of individual achievement and commitment.”

Engraved plaques were presented to the following by Rotary President Diana Davis:

• Sue Peltier of the Miami County YMCA, was nominated by Mayor Kazy Hinds

• Jason Evans of Edison Community College nominated by Chuck Black

• Ralph Ash of Upper Valley Career Center nominated by Sharon Semanie

• Doug Fosnight, employed at Hartzell Propeller, nominated by Don Smith as a freelance photographer

• Frank Nash of the Piqua Daily Call, nominated by Cheryl Stiefel-Francis

Prior to the presentation of awards, Mayor Hinds shared her thoughts about the Piqua community, her first year as mayor, and how individuals such as the award recipients “help to make Piqua a better place to live.”

In closing, Pearson extended personal congratulations to the award winners and noted “you can be proud that you have been singled out by an employer, a client, a fellow employee or a customer for your outstanding approach, attitude, dedication and commitment to your job.”
