Farmer’s market, YWCA offer class

PIQUA — The YWCA and Mainstreet Piqua’s Community Farmers Market are teaming together to present a workshop on Tuesday, July 19, featuring the preparation of cucumbers to make pickles or relish using the hot water bath canning method. The workshop, demonstrated by farmer’s market vendor Tina Burns begins at 7 p.m. at the YWCA, 418 N. Wayne St. The class is open to the public and YWCA membership is not required.

The cost for the class is $10 per person.

“Class participants will learn how to use the hot water bath technique and be comfortable with this method,” said Mainstreet Piqua Executive Director Lorna Swisher. “Several vendors have held workshops at the YWCA and participants have found them to be very helpful so we have expanded them to include other produce items sold at the farmer’s market.”

This workshop will provide lots of opportunities to learn how to use the hot water bath technique as well as ask questions, according to Swisher. Those wishing to sign up for the class may stop at the YWCA Piqua or call 773-6626. Payment is due one week in advance of the class to reserve placement. Space is limited. The YWCA is handicap accessible.

The Piqua Community Farmers Market is held each Thursday from 3:30-6:30 p.m. on the Public Square in downtown Piqua. For more information about the classes, call the YWCA at 773-6626 or Mainstreet Piqua at 773-9355.
