Public transit to offer Dayton trips

MIAMI COUNTY — Starting this month, Miami County’s Public Transit System will begin a pilot program offering rides to Dayton.

After receiving regular requests for out-of-county trips, the department decided to start the program to see how in demand this service really is.

“It’s a request we’ve gotten with a fair amount of regularity for the last several years,” Transit Director Regan Snider said. “It’s something we’re going to try out and just sort of track how it goes.”

From now through December, the department will track usage of the routes before deciding whether to make the service a permanent option.

The department will offer transportation to four locations, Snider said, including Miami Valley Hospital, Good Samaritan North, Dayton Children’s Hospital, and the Dayton International Airport.

“Those are based on things we have had the most requests for,” Snider said. “They’re also all within a 25-mile distance from the transit center. We tried to keep it within that range for now.”

There will be a flat rate for trips to these locations, which Snider says is comparable to Uber fares and local taxi services on similar routes.

“That’s one of the things that we researched when coming up with what would be a reasonable, marketable rate,” she said.

The fare will be $26 one way or $52 round trip.

Members of the system’s Blue Card program — those over the age of 65 and people with documented disabilities — can make trips to Dayton at half-price, Snider said.

The transit system does not have fixed routes, but is instead an on-demand system. In-county trips require at least 24-hour advance scheduling, while rides to Dayton must be scheduled seven to nine days in advance. This pilot program is not intended for daily rides.

“This is a pilot program and we’ll see how it goes,” Snider said. “If we can keep it exactly how it is and it works out well, we will. If not, after that six-month period, we’ll make whatever changes would be best for the community.”

Rides are available Monday through Friday from 5 a.m. to 6 p.m. and on Saturdays from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. To schedule a ride, call (937) 335-7433. For more information about the transit system, visit
