Foundation offers scholarships

MIAMI COUNTY — The Miami County Foundation reminds Miami County high school seniors and graduates the deadline for submitting scholarship applications is Nov. 1.

The Thelma Ross Dalton Memorial Scholarship is for residents to further their post-high school education in any accredited college, trade/vocational or nursing/health related facility.

Miami County Medical Society Scholarship is awarded to a resident who has been accepted into or currently pursuing an approved course of study to become a doctor of medicine or a doctor of osteopathic medicine at an accredited medical school, college or university. Applicant must have a minimum 3.0 GPA, fellowships are not considered and entry-level medical students are encouraged to apply.

The Robert E. Netzley Scholarship is available to Miami County resident whose career goal is to work in public service. A career in government, politics, public service, health and safety or church service is ideal. The recipient may qualify to renew the scholarship.

The Miami County Foundation administers and distributes scholarships annually. A committee comprised of Miami County Foundation board members and residents will select recipients. Applications for all these scholarships are available online at, high schools or by phoning the Miami County Foundation office at (937) 773-9012.

Book club to meet

PLEASANT HILL — Join the Pleasant Hill Library’s book discussion group at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 13, and share in a book discussion with other book enthusiasts; read any or all of The Big Read book selections for the month of October.

“The Book of Unknown Americans” by Cristina Henriquez, “The Invention of Wings” by Sue Monk Kidd, “Just Mercy: A Story of Justice and Redemption” by Bryan Stevenson, and “Orphan Train” by Christina Baker Kline are the books selected for this year’s Big Read.

The book club is open to all adult and young adult readers. Copies of the book will be available at the front desk of the Pleasant Hill Library.

FFA Sponsors Safety Poster Contest

CASSTOWN — The Chapter Recruitment Committee of the Miami East FFA Chapter recently sponsored a farm safety poster contest at Miami East Elementary.

Students in the second grade were given poster board and had to create a farm safety promotion poster. FFA members evaluated the pictures and awarded first place to each homeroom. The results are as follows:

Each student participating received a gift from the FFA chapter, including candy and a pencil. The first place poster in each homeroom was also awarded an FFA Bear.
