MIAMI COUNTY — Amber Weldy embodied the Baker’s Delight award both with her talents and her demeanor this year at the Miami County Fair after being surprised with the award during the Art and Horticulture Hall awards ceremony Sunday evening.
“I was not expecting it,” Weldy, of Troy, said. “That was a big surprise.”
Weldy was unsure she had entered enough items to be considered for the award, but entries like her chocolate-covered toffee, machine white bread, platter of candy, and others earned her the prestigious baking award at the fair. Winners of the Baker’s Delight award have to enter multiple adult baking categories and cannot win consecutive years at the fair.
Weldy, a 10-year 4-H member, has been entering items in the fair for the last 10 to 15 years.
“My thing is if you want to see things at the fair, you have to bring things to the fair,” Weldy said.
The fair is also a family affair for Weldy, as hers is a family of 4-H members and they are able to spend time together preparing entries for the fair.
“It’s a family thing for us. We all do canning, and we bake a lot,” she said, adding, “These are things we do normally.”
Preparing her entries does take a considerable amount of time, though, and she takes time off of work in order to complete them.
“On the baked goods, it probably takes a couple of days to get everything ready,” Weldy said.
Weldy added that she hopes to see more entries in the Art and Horticulture Halls, such as canned goods, in order to create more competition.
For the other two prestigious art awards featured at the fair, Amanda Yingst was the winner of the Artisan of the Year award and Cecil Jackson was the winner of the Golden Trowel award. Neither were in attendance for the award ceremony.
Winners of the Artisan of the Year award are honored for their culinary and craftsmanship talents, and they must enter at least one entry for the categories of needlework, crafts, hobbies, and baked goods.
Winners of the Golden Trowel award are honored for their horticultural skills, and they must enter at least one entry for the categories of flowers, vegetables, container garden, herb garden, and outside decoration.
