CASSTOWN — ‘The Little Mermaid’ will swim right into your hearts when students take the stage at 7 p.m. today, Friday and Saturday at Miami East High School.

Set under and above the high seas, “The Little Mermaid” (based on Disney’s classic film) tells the story of Ariel, an adventurous young mermaid who’s got a thing for disobeying the rules and following her heart. Ariel’s fascination with the human world often leads her to the sea surface, a zone that’s designated as “off-limits” by her father Triton, the sea king.

One day while sneaking to the surface, Ariel witnesses a shipwreck and rescues Prince Eric, with whom she becomes instantly smitten. Furious at Triton’s inability to understand her love for the prince, Ariel runs away and strikes a deal with Ursula, the evil sea witch (and Triton’s sister). With the help of her friends Flounder, Sebastian and Scuttle, she sets off to experience the life she dreams of on land.

“Having worked with the musical for the last 10 or so years, I can confidently say that this is probably our biggest show to date at Miami East,” said Kristy Hurst, intervention specialist who works with the school’s spring productions. “This production of ‘Little Mermaid’ has been in the works for two years and that has allowed us plenty of time to incorporate several fun special effects that we hope the audience will love. We worked with a team at MadCap Puppets to bring Flounder, Sebastian and Scuttle to life and we are sure that these characters will bring an extra element of fun to the show.”

Hurst said also in the true Disney spirit, they are hosting a pancake breakfast with the characters from 10:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Saturday in the high school cafeteria.

“Ariel, Prince Eric, Sebastian, Flounder and Scuttle will all be present for pictures and meet and greets,” Hurst said. “This is a donation-only event designed to help make the show that much more fun for our younger audience members.”
