Girls basketball district titles as well as boys basketball sectional titles will be on the line Saturday for the five local teams.

Versailles, Covington and Russia will be playing for girls basketball district titles Saturday,

Versailles, 22-3, will play Bethel-Tate, 19-6, for a Springfield D-III district title at 11 a.m.

Versailles advanced with a 68-36 win over Miami East in the sectional finals and so far in the postseason, the Lady Tigers are averaging 73.7 points, while allowing just 23.7 points per game.

Bethel Tate, a D-III district champion a year ago, was the fifth seed in the Cincinnati sectional and advanced with a 56-52 win over Purcell-Marian.

Covington and Russia will play each other for a Troy Division IV district title at 11 a.m. Saturday.

The two teams come in with matching 20-5 records.

In the regular season meeting, the game was tied midway through the fourth quarter before Russia pulled away for a 45-33 victory.

Covington advanced by winning a 42-38 thriller over Southeastern, with Sammi Whiteman sinking four free throws in the final 15 seconds.

Russia advanced with its third win of the season over Fort Loramie, 49-36.

BOYS BASKETBALL

Russia, Versailles

play for sectionals

Versailles and Russia will both play for sectional titles Saturday.

The Russia boys, 18-5, will play Fort Loramie, 19-5 for the Piqua D-IV sectional title at 7 p.m. Saturday.

Versailles, 24-1, will play 10th seed Dayton Christian, 17-6, for a Northmont D-III sectional title at 4:30 p.m.

TROY — The Newton boys basketball team had its season end with a 62-43 loss to Southeastern Wednesday in Troy D-IV sectional action.

Smith competes

BEAVERCREEK — Piqua’s Travis Miller had an outstanding career end at the Division I district bowling tournament at Beaver-Vu Lanes.

Travis Smith started with a 207 game, before rolling games of 151 and 155 for a 513 series.

COLUMBUS — The Versailles boys will compete in the Division II state bowling tournament Saturday.

The tournament will be held at Wayne Webb Lanes in Columbus.

HILLIARD — The Versaillesgymnastics team will compete in the gymnastics state tournament Friday and Saturday at Hilliard-Bradley High School.

The tournament will be held at Wayne Webb Lanes in Columbus.
