LIMA — Covington had a strong first day at the Lima Central Catholic (LCC) Invitational on Friday night, finishing the first day of the tournament in third place out of 41 teams. The Buccs advanced seven of their eleven competing wrestlers through the first two championship rounds and into the quarterfinals. Another three Covington wrestlers are still alive in the consolation bracket, advancing to the third round.
Connor Ryan (113 lbs) advanced with a first round bye and a 7-6 decision over Jacob Amstutz of Woodmore, while brother Coleman Ryan (120) upset the no. 6 seed Jevyn Pratt of Carey, 3-1 in overtime, then defeated Lucas Freeman of Allen East, 9-7.
Jared Ford (126) pinned Mason Vanetta of Hicksville and Clayton Schirmir of Blanchester in the first two rounds, while brother Ryan Ford (138) pinned Andrew Harmon of Miami East and Hunter Radar of Cory-Rawson.
Lance Miller (160) earned a 16-1 technical fall over Gage Bellows of Spencerville, before pinning Leo Haban of Madeira. Brandon Magee (182) had an opening round bye then pinned Garrett Miller of Hicksville, while Seth Thomas (220) upset the no. 8 seed Alec Rhoades of Liberty-Benton, 7-3, before pinning Lane Brooks of Ottawa-Glandorf.
Joey Schmelzer (170) pinned Curtis Ray of McComb before losing ?-? to the no. 6 seed Isaiah Pritchard of Dixie. He then won his second round consolation bout by pin over Joe Christoph of New London. Carl Lankford (285) also won his first match by pin over Jack Goonan of Ayersville, before falling to the no. 2 seed Ben Ferguson of Miami East. He then won his next bout by injury default.
Josh Sowers (145) dropped his opening match in overtime, 10-8, but rebounded with a pin over Chip Riechman of Summit Country Day. He then pinned Noah Campbell of Newark Catholic. Gage DeHart (152) also dropped his first match, losing 10-2 to Ryan Sammet of McComb, before defeating Tri-County North’s Dylan Curtain by pin. He then dropped a 5-4 decision to Brad Smith of St. Paul.
