CENTERVILLE — Piqua Kelsey Bachman punched her ticket to the girls Division I district tournament Tuesday at Beavercreek Golf Club.

Breaking a record and making school history was just an added bonus.

Bachman shot a 90 Wednesday at Yankee Trace in the Division I sectional to earn a spot at district.

She tied for the third individual spot (four advance) and lost a playoff with Samantha McLaughlin of Bellefontaine.

“That was definitely a goal for the next two years (to get to district),” Bachman said. “I felt really good about the way I was playing and it is great to do it as a junior.”

Then, Bachman got a call from Chip Hare, telling her she had broken the 18-hole Piqua scoring record and was Piqua’s first district qualifier in girls golf.

“That really means a lot,” Bachman said. “I cried when I got that phone call.”

She knew it would not be an easy goal to accomplish.

“Not all all,” she said about feeling good about her chances. “Because I know how good all those girls are. Girls golfers are a lot better than people think.”

Bachman started on the Heritage nine, before finishing on the Vintage nine. She shot 45 on both nines.

“I felt pretty good after the first nine holes,” Bachman said. “I didn’t know where I stood, but everyone was telling me that was the hard nine. All I knew was I was ahead of the two girls I was playing with.”

Bachman said playing “smart golf” was a mistake.

“I didn’t take any chances (on the final nine holes),” Bachman said. “I played safe.”

Now, she faces the challenge of the district tournament at Beavercreek Golf Club.

“I just want to go down there and have fun — enjoy the moment,” she said. “I just want to improve. So, breaking 90 would be a good goal. I have done it before — just not in a tournament while playing for Piqua.”

Piqua finished 12th as a team with a 439 total.

Other Piqua scores were Korren Evans 101, Adde Honeycutt 122, Skylar Sloan 126 and Caitlin Roberson 134.
