Lehman girls netters face tough opponents; Piqua golfer keep improving, Slusher cards 37 for Buccs; East boys, girls golfers record wins

SIDNEY — The Lehman girls tennis team opened the season with two tough matches.

On Monday, Lehman lost to Miami Valley 5-0.

“I thought our girls played well,” Lehman coach Tim Ungericht said. “Miami Valley is one of the top two Division II teams in the Dayton area and the toughest team we will play the entire season. We were missing half of our first doubles team so we had to move Grace up from JV but its good experience for her.

In singles, Claire Larger lost to Olivia Schrager 6-1, 6-0; Sarah Gibson lost to Janine Quigley 6-1, 6-0; and Melanie Brunner lost to Liyah Varghise 6-1, 4-0 retired.

In doubles, Angela Brunner and Ann Pennaparra lost to Eleanor Liu and Vennala Vallablahani 6-0, 6-1; and Kierra Burns and Grace Brandt lost to Vai Tresse and Shraya Sandhlir 6-1, 6-1.

Lehman lost 4-1 to Milton-Union Tuesday

In singles, Claire Larger defeated Hannah Fugate 6-3, 6-4; Sarah Gibson lost to Abby Hissong 6-2, 6-0; and Melanie Brunner lost to Meredith Fitch 6-0, 6-0.

In doubles, Alex Read and Angela Brunner lost to Laura Billing and Carlin Bushleman 6-1, 6-1; and Kiera Burns and Anna Pennaparra lost to Rachel Rock and Hailey Lauterbur 6-7(2), 6-1, 1-0(7).

Grace Brandt and Shannon Staley won 6-3 in a JV doubles match.

Piqua boys

top Covington

The Piqua boys golf team has improved with every match and Tuesday was no exception.

The Indians recorded a 193-206 win over Covington at Echo Hills in non-conference.

Piqua was trailing by one when fifth man Matt Herron came in with a team low 47 to secure the victory.

Other Piqua scores were Aaron Davis was 48, Kyle Kommer 48, Nick Wright 50, Evan Hicks 57 and Decker Jackson 61.

Covington’s Andrew Slusher was medalist with 37.

Other Covington scores were Dylan Lucas 51, Hunter Alexander 59, Tom Kuether 59, Randy Anthony 67 and Jobe Morgan 68.

Newton drops

match with MU

The Newton boys golf team lost to Milton-Union 162-180 Tuesday at Homestead.

Chet Jamison led Newton with a 42.

Other Newton scores were Ross Ferrell 43, Garrett Peters 45, Nate Zielenski 50, Nash Lavy 53 and Drew Thiesing 57.

East wins

CCC Preview

WEBSTER — The Miami East boys golf team won the CCC Preview at Stillwater Valley Golf Course with a 237 score.

Miami East scores were Zac Johnson and Runner, 78; Cooper Elleman and Sam Zapadaka 86, Luke Gilliand and Kyle Fellers 93.

Johnson and Runner also finished fifth overall.

Newton finished third with a 260 total.

Chet Jamison and Nathan Zielinski finished fourth overall with a 76.

Drew Thiesing and Ferrell had a 91 and Nash Lavy and Garrett Peters had a 93.

Covington finished seventh with 318.

Bucc scores were Andrew Slusher and Jobe Morgan 95, Dylan Lucas and Grant Humphrey 100 and Hunter Alexander and Tom Kuether 123.

Bradford scores were Hayden Dickerson and Eric Sanders 94, Brayden Sanders and Owens of Tri-County North 134 and Stump and Jenn Wolf 172.

ST. PARIS — The Miami East girls golf team defeated Covington 196-290 at Lakeland Golf Course.

Paige Lawson was match medalist with a 45 for Miami East.

Other Lady Viking scores were Emily Rowley 49, Marissa Kearns 51, Maci Kristes 51 and Kearsten Kirby 53.

Covington scores were Emily Hedrick 71, Katie Hembree 71, Morgan Lowe 73 and Mackenzie Gambill 75.
