TROY — Troy High School varsity boys basketball coach Tim Miller will serve a self-imposed two-game suspension this weekend as a result of an incident at a Jan. 25 Troy Junior Basketball game, the school announced on Thursday.

Assistant coaches Mark Evilsizor and Brett Kopp will take over the Trojans for tonight’s Greater Western Ohio Conference North Division matchup at Sidney and Saturday’s home game against inter-county rival Miami East.

In an offical statement, Miller said the sanctions stem from his reaction to an on-the-court incident that involved his son during a game at VanCleve Elementary School.

“On Saturday, Jan. 25, while attending my son’s Troy Jr. Basketball game against Tipp, I used extremely poor judgement in reaction to a situation that involved my son during the course of the game,” Miller said. “My behavior that afternoon was uncalled for, out of character and well beyond the spirit of interscholastic athletics, and goes against the expectations that I instill in my own players and coaches as the head boys basketball coach at Troy High School.

“As a result, I have chosen to suspend myself as the head coach for the Troy High School boys basketball games with Sidney on Friday, Feb. 7 and Miami East on Saturday, Feb. 8. It is my desire to use this as a teachable moment.”

Prior to becoming head coach, Miller was a long-time assistant at Troy, working with three different head coaches dating back to the 1990s.

Miller has enjoyed success as the Troy High School coach during an up-and-down tenure. In the 2010-11 season, the Trojans went 16-7 and won a Division I sectional championship, reaching the district title game for the first time since 2005, before Miller was coach. And in the 2011-12 season, Troy won its first GWOC North title, going 10-0 in division play and 17-7 overall en route to its second straight sectional title and district final berth.

The Trojans went 6-17 last season and are currently 3-13 heading into tonight’s game.
